Behind the Scenes at Deertrees Theatre  + ACT III

Introducing ACT III: Our New Historic Building Campaign

A Campaign to raise needed funding for Historic Deertrees Theatre – GOAL 40K

Dear friends and patrons.  Please support Deertrees this Giving Tuesday, a global movement dedicated to local non-profits.  A donation to our ACT III campaign will help us address important infrastructure needs for our “Enchanted Playhouse” and continue to improve the quality of your Deertrees Theatre experience as we work to maintain our landmark treasure. Thank you for supporting these necessary preservations and improvements, which will ensure the continued production of inspiring art and performances for our community.

Preserving History with your HELP – You’re in good Company!

When Deertrees Theatre opened on August 15, 1936, Walter Hampden, one of the most famous stage actors of the time, did some dramatic poetry reading and scenes from Cyrano de Bergerac. Hampton gained fame during his years with a Shakespearean Company and later gained many honors as a stage actor. As he grew old, his talents transferred to film. He acted in movies with Audrey Hepburn, Betty Davis, William Holden, and Humphrey Bogart.

Humphrey Bogart was a significant donor to Deertrees. Other famous people who contributed money to Deertrees included Actress Helen Hayes, actress Miriam Hopkin, actor Pat O’Brien, actress, playwright, and screenwriter Cornelia Otis Skinner, and singer, musician, actor, and radio host Rudy Vallee. Donations have kept Deertrees alive over the years.

2024 Season Recap

Our 2024 season was a tremendous success! “On Golden Pond” and “The Producers” drew sold-out crowds who thoroughly enjoyed both productions. The Tartan Terrors brought the house down once again with their energetic Celtic music, proving their unique blend of charisma and talent can always get an audience moving. Susie Pepper returned, captivating both children and adults with her powerful vocals and heartfelt connection with the crowd. “The Dark Side of Somewhere” Dance Immersion dazzled with a visually stunning experience. Each event this year brought something special and unique, thanks to our dedicated Executive and Artistic Director, Gail Phaneuf, whose incredible vision has brought music, theater, light shows, dance, and art to life on our stage.

ACT III – A Season of Giving     Focus: Repairs & Remodels

While we’ve managed to replace two sections of roofing over the main stage and audience seating, another section is now leaking over the upstairs technical control room, potentially risking damage to valuable equipment. The roof over the Salt Lick Cafe and adjacent areas also needs attention.

In addition, several exterior siding boards have become so weathered and brittle that they have developed major gaps, allowing elements and critters to enter, which could lead to even more costly repairs.  We have consulted with a construction engineer on how best to replace that large area of Hemlock siding.

A large section of the front of the main stage is compromised and in need of reinforcement, new flooring and stairs.  This is a project that will need to be completed by spring of 2025.

Our parking area, driveway and land behind the workshop entrance suffered damage from heavy spring rains.  As a result, we have reduced the number of available parking spaces. Repairs are needed by spring 2025.

We have two underutilized and unfinished rooms upstairs for costume design and storage needs that require renovation in order to safely build and store costume pieces. Insulation and air conditioning would be required to create suitable space.

Thank you for your continued support and love for Deertrees Theatre!  Have Happy and Healthy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year!
